The Outside

Tonight, I discovered a small door high in the wall that my staff had left open. I do not know why they leave things partially open, or closed for that matter. Maybe they are too lazy to open things all the way. I am sure it is not because they want to keep me out of something, because that would obviously inconvenience me and I don’t see why they would ever want to do that.

So I took it upon myself today to finish opening the small door, and once I opened it, I decided that since I had never been through the door, I should see what was behind it. I had looked through the door often during the day, and I have always liked what I saw, so I anticipated greatness.

The floor behind the door is soft, and green, and delicious-smelling, and the air is very cool, and the ceiling is awfully far away. I spent quite a lot of time kneading the floor. I also looked for the birds that I have seen, but everything through that door is dark and still, and a little boring.

Worse still, there is no staff on the outside.

When I realised that my staff was on the other side of the door, and that the door was a long way up, I tried circling around the perimeter to locate my staff. But the I realised that it was silly for me to do all this work, so I sat down on a cool spot of hard floor and waited for my staff to come and fetch me. It took them a lot longer than it should have, but eventually mum came out and took me back inside. I did not want to go inside, I wanted them to join me outside, but she insisted that we all stay inside.

One thing about the inside is that it has my dinner, so I suppose I’ll consider staying inside. The staff is currently trying to make me promise to stay inside but I think I have made it clear that I am not ready yet to make an official comment. They, on the other paw, have taken to closing all small doors very securely now.

Oh Wednesday, you really did give us an awful fright! I promise that I will make an effort to bring out the annoying indoor bird that you enjoy so much more often so you don’t feel the need to go looking for other birds outside.

Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday. You dear cat. I hope that your curiosity has been satisfied because what you don’t know is that “outside” while wondrous is also quite dangerous. Sure, you’ve heard the stories about cats that live in the wild and you’ve seen other cats that are perhaps “indoor/outdoor” cats but, trust me, they’re life is not nearly as comfortable as yours. If you care about your staff even a little, keep their stress levels low and maintain your vigil of the surroundings from *inside* rather than outside. Everybody wins that way.

Oh Wednesday it sounds like Link, your dog cousin, and you have been having some adventures. Link wants to you to know he had a great adventure outside today as well. Mom, two legged staff, who grandma calls my girl, and grandma drove me to a new park today. They kept asking me if I wanted to go see the ducky’s. I perked up my ears and looked at them quizzickly because while the word sounded fun I had not a clue to what my staff was speaking of. I do love rides in the car so I decided to take them up on the offer and jumped in the big red box. When the big red box stopped moving I could see water… lots of water, trees, a few people and… and yes… another dog. .. come on mom let me out I … I want to say hi! I’m ready let’s go. Oh the dog is gone around the water. Hey this place is new and the leaves smell great… Yep it’s fall. The leaves have come to play with me. Sometimes they play tag and won’t let me go. So sometimes I play tag and don’t let them go even though they try to run away with the wind. What’s that smell… come on Mom your not walking fast enough. Wow Look I can go out so water is on this side and that and in front of me. I can’t touch it though. There are poles all around. Okay let’s go back grandma caught up. Here we go Mom is walking faster except silly grandma keeps telling us to stop so she can take pictures. I want to explore… I don’t like this thing they call a bridge…No I won’t stop there for a picture grandma. Wait what is Mom doing? She is crinkling something could it be… a treat for me… something new… Look at me I am dancing. Oh. That’s my regular treat. What’s in the crinkly ba…g, what are those. Jerking … what are those… what’s that sound. Let me at them. Should I … Hey Mom treats are for me. Why do they get those new treats? Ohhhh, that that is still my regular treats. Mom gives me to grandma because she can’t hold me in… I want to see those funny things. Wait they are surrounding my Mom and I can’t get them. I just want to get closer… thanks grandma. I am being a good boy she told me. I think they are happy because I did not talk to the new friends, they call it “bark”. I was real happy to see them. They called the friends ducks. sometimes “Ducky’s” I like that sound…Oh, “Ducky’s make a real funny noise. I don’t think I know that language yet. Are they laughing at me? Oh I will go drink some water from the big puddle they call “lake”. Mom is laughing and having fun giving the ducky’s the new treat I think she called them crackers.
Mom finally stood up and took me back. We went for a short hike up a hill while grandma waited. We bounded over trees and leaves and went up and down. Then we went back to grandma. She was still there sitting when we came down. Oh no, She has camera again. She keeps telling Mom walk up the hill part way and walk slower back so she can take “pictures” I think it’s fun… Mom doesn’t.
Back around the lake. Hey were almost at the red box. There are some staffers sitting on boards just looking at water. Mom says she is getting my water dish and kneels down … I see mom. .. What’s that Mooom…. I see… I see …. Duuuccccky’s here I come. I am free… I can fly…. Splash…. Hi Duccckky’s I can swim with you…. What, huh Mommy and Grandma are hollering my name but I am taking swimming lessons with my new friends… Hey Wednesday do you like water… I do…The old staffers are laughing sitting there. I think they are laughing at Mom and grandma staff. Boy that was fun … shake. I wish I could have gotten all the way to my friends. Mom went and got a towel from the red box and then we went home. I really do not know what the fuss was all about.
I hope my staff takes me to see my new friends again. Grandma said it was not like I could read the no swimming signs. I saw them. I read them. I just thought it was for two footed staff. I was swimming with my friends. Have fun Wednesday. I know that soft green carpet is great isn’t it. And birdies … oh and squirrels! Do you like squirrels? I do their fluffy and fun to chase and oh Mom’s calling me I think she has a treat … Bye!
