The magazine ImagineFX covers tools of the digital art trade, but generally has a bias toward the usual commercial products. Even though open source tools are used quite heavily (and sometimes exclusively) in some markets, ImagineFX tends to not report or feature those apps.
So imagine the surprise of all of us over at KDE when we found out that our very own, open source, Krita had been selected as the Artists Choice Award for best app of 2014!
I can attest that Krita is an amazing digital paint application, and I’ve used it for artwork for the back cover of one of my books, and I enjoy practising my [weak] drawing skills with it. Its material emulation is stunning, and in typical KDE tradition, it is endlessly configurable. Best part of all of this is that it’s open source, so the art I create today will be available to me now, and well into the future; no catch, no licensing fees to access my own work.
If you are a painter looking to cross over into the digital realm, or a digital painter who has been using the wrong tool for the job or else are just looking for something without an annual subscription fee, check out Krita!
I’m aware of KDE, especially fond of its logo, and share in your excitement over Krita’s award. That is certainly telling about the quality of open source software and the community of support.
Perhaps a sample of your work using that app could be appended to this post? Perhaps even as the banner for this post? The waiting world has an insatiable appetite for all manner of creative expression.
