On a roll (or “where I went”) —

It was a Christmas trip. A kind of Christmas Part II for a family member not co-located with the main body. I was happy that the near constant precipitation was only rain and not snow. I did encounter a couple of hours of fog on the high parts of I-68. It slowed me down and made for a longer day than planned but the prize of a smile was worth the effort.
And that is what the mission was all about. Deliver to Mom a picture book as a Christmas gift intended to bring recurring smiles.
When Alzheimer’s Disease sets in, there is the “old memory” but only a tiny window of the immediate here and now.
The pictures may serve to stir the old memory and bring a moment of immediate pleasure to the here and now; an opportunity to revive and relive pleasant feelings of happy times.
This image is a detail of a photo taken on Mother’s Day 2003.
The visit was characteristically brief. Only an hour or so. During the visit, the staff seemed to enjoy the pictures more than my mother. But she watched and definitely took notice of the dogs and horses in several of the pictures.
While Mom grew tired rather quickly, she may enjoy them over and over. But that’s the whole point.
Hi Ed,
I’m still touched by what a sweet blend of thoughtfulness, creativity, and utility you’ve come up with here. Your book is beautiful. Using your skills to bring joy to another person is a wonderful thing to do.
All the best,
